With thanks to John for the link, The Dallas Morning News has an article, and a video, about iconographer Vladimir Grigorenko and his eight-year effort at St Seraphim Orthodox Cathedral, Dallas.
The church’s website also has a page on iconography, with many interesting and visual links, including links to Vladimir’s own website which contains, [...]

Back to Arabic class last night: fun! fun! fun!
A great teacher [my first male Arabic teacher], with a wonderful sense of humour, and it seems like a great class. I have a fair bit to catch up with my vocabulary — I have forgotten so much — and my lack of ability with the [...]

Keinohrhasen

Rabbit Without Ears, the final film I saw as part of the German Film Festival. I am not usually one for romantic comedies, but I greatly, greatly, enjoyed this film.
A short film, Diary of a perfect love [Tagebuch einer perfekten Liebe], preceeded the film: another very enjoyable, and quirky, short film.
Rabbit Without Ears concerns [...]

Great and Holy Saturday

Saturday, April 26th, 2008

Today Hades cried out groaning: “My authority is dissolved; I received a mortal as one of the mortals; but this One I am powerless to contain; with Him I lose all those over which I had ruled. For ages I had held the dead but, behold, He raised up all.”
Glory O Lord to Your [...]

Great and Holy Friday

Friday, April 25th, 2008

Today He who hung the earth upon the waters is hung upon a tree (x3).
The King of Angels is decked with a crown of thorns.
He, who wrapped the Heavens in clouds, is wrapped with the purple of mockery.
He, who freed Adam in the Jordan, is slapped on the face.
The Bridegroom of the Church is transfixed [...]

Hymn of Kassiani

Thursday, April 24th, 2008

This is a beautiful hymn sung as part of the Holy Wednesday [held on Tuesday evening] Bridegroom Service. I was written by Kassiani the Nun. According to that article, fifty of her hymns are still in existence and twenty-three of these are included in Orthodox Church liturgical books. The Hymn of Kassiani [...]
