Break

Monday, November 20th, 2006

I’m going to take a break from blogging for a while. It may not seem like it, but it is a fairly hard thing to do when your mind isn’t focused, or when it is wandering around at a million miles an hour on unhelpful tangents…
God bless: I’ll still be around annoying you all [...]

Orthodoxy in China

Sunday, November 19th, 2006

Last night I, and several other people from my parish, went to the ROCOR parish at Cabramatta (the third church on that page) for a dinner and talk by His Eminence Archbishop Hilarion on the Orthodox Church in China. The night was also a fundraiser in aid of the building of Saint John the [...]

Preparation for Mass

Saturday, November 18th, 2006

Thanks be to God the Bible studies continue to go well: I was a bit scattered this week, and a bit unhappy with my scatteredness, but, thanks be to God, it did seem to come together and there was a lot of discussion. We are beginning to look at an overview of Jesus’ ministry [...]

Skye

Friday, November 17th, 2006

Because I worked last weekend, I got some time off in lieu.
Yesterday afternoon I went to visit my niece, Skye, and my parents and sister: and am very glad I did. She is growing up so much, even week by week. She is coming out with more and more words, she is copying [...]

Abba Joseph said to Abba Nisterus…

Thursday, November 16th, 2006

…”What should I do about my tongue, for I cannot control it?” The old man said to him, “When you speak, do you find peace?” He replied, “No.” The old man said, “If you do not find peace, why do you speak? Be silent and when a conversation takes place, it is better to listen [...]

Fire and Snow

Wednesday, November 15th, 2006

There are two bushfires burning in the Blue Mountains, the mountains that are part of the Great Dividing Range to the west of Sydney.
Tonight they are also expecting snow up there: though probably not enough to put the fires out.

Nativity Fast

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

The Nativity Fast begins tomorrow. As we journey with the Lenten Fast towards Pascha (Easter), through the Nativity Fast we journey to that glorious Feast, the Nativity According to the Flesh of our Lord, God and Saviour Jesus Christ (I have said the Orthodox don’t go for brevity in feast names: this is a [...]

Yum!

Tuesday, November 14th, 2006

An absolutely scrumptious dinner tonight: and, with the beginning of the Nativity Fast tomorrow [more on that in an entry to follow] (which I had forgotten about until this afternoon!), I certainly had a very pleasant ‘last’ meal.
If I were to say we had venison, you may think we went to a rather swank place [...]

Thank You

Monday, November 13th, 2006

Thank you all: what a wonderful community this is.
Thanks be to God, through your prayers I’m feeling a bit better today. While work is still a bit of a struggle, I am looking forward to dinner tonight.
Arabic class was great fun, as usual — and we had a wonderful surprise during our break [...]

Mood

Sunday, November 12th, 2006

I thought with summer approaching, and we had a warm, and humid, taste of it yesterday, I could, perhaps, say goodbye to depression for a few months: the sun is shining, birds are singing…I could be happy. But unfortunately the brain, my brain, seems to have its own timetable.
One of the worst aspects of [...]
