When it rains, it pours

Thursday, June 30th, 2005

From The Sydney Morning Herald [may require free registration]

While we in Sydney rejoice in the rain, those in Far North NSW are evacuating as floods peak. And two people are missing after a call from their car was cut.
Lord, have mercy.

Oyster Farmer

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

Through being on my local ABC radio’s e-mail list, I scored a free ticket to a preview of the new Aussie film Oyster Farmer. I greatly enjoyed this movie.
The film is set along the Hawkesbury River, a very scenic area around 60 kilometres north of Sydney. The beautiful river [which is [...]

Rain and More Rain

Wednesday, June 29th, 2005

Thanks be to God.
We’ve had a few days of reasonable rain, and the forecast says there is more on the way. And I have heard that it is falling over Sydney’s water catchment area. May it continue.
If the grey skies are getting you down, take a look at this entry from the wiblog [...]

Dinner #2 This Week

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

I was off to Cronulla tonight, to have dinner with a friend who is heading back to England in a few weeks before moving to South Korea to teach English as a Second Language. He has recently finished a Masters in TESOL [Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages], and is looking forward to [...]

The Holy Glorious and All-Praised Leader of the Apostles, Peter & Paul

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

Tomorrow [Wednesday] is the commemoration of the The Holy Glorious and All-Praised Leader of the Apostles, Peter & Paul. The Orthodox Church in America has provided a sermon by Saint Augustine, on the celebration of this feast. It was wonderful to read, and I was particularly moved by the final paragaph:

Dinner #1 (of 4)

Tuesday, June 28th, 2005

Four dinners this week — I feel particularly busy! It’s always great to catch up with friends, enjoy yourself over a nice meal and to meet new people as well. Yesterday I caught up with two fellow posters on the Ship of Fools forums; tonight I am off to Cronulla to meet a [...]

The innumerable company of Saints

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

With the joyful celebration yesterday of all the faithful who have gone before us still ringing in my ears, I eagerly looked to see who was commemorated in the Church calendar today. From today, each day I shall try to read a short summary of the life of at least one Saint, through the [...]

Can you tell I’m a Proud Uncle?

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

Some photos taken several weeks back. I’m quickly scanned them to send off to the relatives, so excuse the quality (or lack thereof!)

All Saints

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

While the Western rites celebrate the Feast of All Saints on November 1, in Orthodoxy it is celebrated on the first Sunday after Pentecost. The Feast of All Saints commemorates the “great cloud of witnesses”: all those who have gone before us in the faith, both those known to us and those known only [...]

Beirut by Night

Sunday, June 26th, 2005

A fantastic evening last night of dinner and dancing with those from my TESOL Certificate class, and some of their partners, at Beirut by Night, a Lebanese dinner and dancing club. The food was fantastic, the conversation — with the wine — flowed, and almost everyone got up for a dance.
The food. I [...]
