The “freshly-baked” Uncle

Thursday, March 31st, 2005

I received a nice Easter e-mail from a German friend who asked how it was being a “frischgebacken” uncle. I’d never come across that word before, and translating it literally it came out as “freshly baked”! I’m guessing it means “recent”.
Language can be fun!

Another earthquake

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

From the ABC:
A three-metre wave smashed into the Indonesian island of Simeulue, off the coast of Sumatra, causing extensive damage shortly after a massive earthquake, a military official said.
Up to 2,000 people are believed to have died in the earthquake.

Lord, have mercy.
Christ, have mercy.
Lord, have mercy.

That’ll teach me!

Forgetting various friends read this wiblog, the mention of my birthday has got the phones-a-ringing [I've managed to hide my birthday from various friends...no longer, alas!]
A nice cup of coffee will feature tonight. Thank you N — I shall be more careful in my wiblog revelations in the future!

First Teaching Practice

Tuesday, March 29th, 2005

Today was the big day. I was extremely nervous before-hand, and even as the class started my nerves continued to show. But once I began the first activity [on objects you find in a house: bed, fridge, TV, spoon, etc.], I started to feel a bit better. I needed to ask the [...]

Happy (Western) Easter!

Saturday, March 26th, 2005

Alleluia!
Christ is Risen!

Come, ye faithful, raise the strain of triumphant gladness;
God hath brought His Israel into joy from sadness;
Loosed from Pharaoh's bitter yoke Jacob's sons and daughters,
Led them with unmoistened foot through the Red Sea waters.
'Tis the spring of souls today; Christ has burst His prison,
And from three days' sleep in death as a sun [...]

Good Friday

Friday, March 25th, 2005

For the international guests, we here in the land of Oz get Good Friday and Easter Monday as public holidays.
I decided to make the most of the time off yesterday and visit St Francis of Assisi again for their Solemn Commemoration of the Lord’s Passion and Presanctified Mass. It was a very [...]

A Tale of Two Feasts

Friday, March 25th, 2005

In the West, today is both Good Friday and the the Feast of the Annunciation [the announcement by the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary that our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ, the Son of God, would become incarnate and enter into this world through her womb]. In the East, as Easter Sunday isn’t [...]

Symbolism

Friday, March 25th, 2005

Symbolism in church speaks to me, often far more than words can. I’m not saying words are not important, far from it, but simple acts of ceremony, or particular changes in the furnishings or colours, stir up something deep within me.
Last night I went to the Anglican parish of St James’, King Street for [...]

Tenebrae

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

I braved the wild weather — and it was rather wild in parts — and set off to St Francis of Assisi, Paddington for their Liturgy of Tenebrae and Reconcilation. I sat with a friend from the Ship of Fools, and we enjoyed a drink at the pub afterwards. After the service I [...]

Stormy Weather

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2005

Some rather stormy weather is expected to sweep through central and eastern NSW today. Wind gusts of up to 110 km/hr, and on the radio one of the forecasters from the Bureau of Meteorology said rainfalls may reach up to 200mm in a 24-hour period! I’m reconsidering driving into the city for a [...]
