Remembering Auschwitz

Monday, January 31st, 2005

The world remembered Auschwitz last week: I can’t add anything.
I visited Mauthausen Concentration Camp in Austria in 1998. The site of the camp is now a memorial. The day I went was a rainy, windy, cold day — the “perfect” weather [if you see what I mean] for such a visit. It [...]

Memory Eternal!

Sunday, January 30th, 2005

The grandmother of our priest passed away this morning. Please pray for Fr John and his family.
May her memory be eternal!
A subdued prolonged Matins and Typika [a service when a priest is not present in order to celebrate the Divine Liturgy] service today therefore, though still joyful and filled with hope. It was [...]

Uncle Ian

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

My first niece was born about an hour ago [~7.50am], after my sister went into labour around 4.45am.
Mum and bub are doing fine.
That’s all I know for now. More updates later.

Assessment at Cronulla

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

A friend who lives at Cronulla is doing his Certificate IV in Workplace Assessment and Training, and asked me if I’d be the guinea pig for his Assessment Task component. Always willing to try new things I said, “Yes.”
The assessment he created was writing a report from notes taken while watching a business programme [...]

Feast Day of St Ephraim the Syrian

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

By a flood of tears you made the desert fertile,
And your longing for God brought forth fruits in abundance.
By the radiance of miracles you illumined the whole universe.
O our holy father Ephraim, pray to Christ our God to save our souls!
Troparion
O holy father Ephraim,
As you meditated constantly on the final judgment,
You shed abundant tears of [...]

Sunday Matins Hymns II

Thursday, January 27th, 2005

Another hymn from Matins, which echoes Psalm 118:
God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us.
Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord.
O give thanks unto the Lord for His is good; for His mercy endures forever.
God is the Lord and has revealed Himself to us.
Blessed is He who comes [...]

The Thought Project

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

By Simon Høgsberg, with thanks to the Saint at Dogfight at Bankstown for pointing it out:
Over a period of 3 months I stopped 150 strangers on the street and asked them what they where thinking about the second before I stopped them. Using a mic and a dictaphone I recorded what they told me, [...]

Australia Day

Wednesday, January 26th, 2005

A very nice Australia Day.
Lunch at Mado Cafe in Auburn — entrée: cucumber dip with a wondrous bread; main: grilled chicken with spices galore on rice with salad, and mince ’sausages’ [I forget what they were called] on puffed wheat with salad; dessert: Turkish tea and hazelnut ice-cream. Absolutely delicious. The cafe is [...]

Is posted over at Word from the Desert. Beautiful.
Australia Day today. I’m off with friends to a Turkish lunch and then to the Australian Museum to see the “Life Beyond the Tomb — Death in Ancient Egypt” exhibit.
